COATESVILLE — The Community Youth & Women’s Alliance needs donations for repairs and replacements after a fire Tuesday afternoon.
About 12:45 p.m., fire broke out on the third floor of the CYWA in the 400 block of East Lancaster Highway. Coatesville Fire Chief Kevin Johnson said it’s likely the fire started in a wall, but the cause remains under investigation.
The fire was contained in a third-floor bedroom, where a few families slept. Roughly 30 people were forced to leave the building when the fire started, according to Roger Wayne, a CYWA fundraiser.
“We’re going to have to find some room for some of these girls and families,” Wayne said.
Wayne said the CYWA also needs donations to repair damages and replace ruined items. The CYWA now needs three single beds, he said, and the building sustained significant damage to its roof and windows.
The alliance operates a shelter for women and children. Various community initiatives are offered there as well, including after-school youth programs and a drug-rehabilitation program.
The CYWA moved into its building in 1920.
